Electronic health information and privacy

Planning for EHIP 2007

Recently the Second Annual Electronic Health Information and Privacy Conference was held. First, in case you could not attend, all of the presentation materials have been posted on the web site. Second, I wanted to give you some statistics: we had close to 150 attendees, numbers similar to the inaugural event in 2005. The feedback we received indicated that attendees found this conference to provide a lot of "hands on" and detailed information that they can use. This has been the our objective and we will continue to organize it that way.

We are now planning for the 2007 event. We want to change the format slightly. We will define some high level themes, assign a session to each theme, and invite an expert in that area to organize a session around that theme. Here is an initial set of themes:

  • Canadians' perceptions and values around privacy
  • What are the real risks to Canadians' health data privacy from the USA PATRIOT Act ?
  • De-identification guidelines
  • Medical identity theft
  • Research Ethics Boards case studies (difficult cases presented to Canadian REBs and how they have been dealt with)
  • Evolution of privacy legislation in Canada

If you have any comments on the format and these topics, or topic suggestions please send me an email.
