Canadian data sources

For those doing research on re-identification risks and need some data sets for testing their models, a good summary of Canadian data sets available which may be useful for such an analysis is:

Databases containing personal information

In one of our recent publications we looked at public sources of personal information that can be used to launch re-identification attacks on anonymized databases (click here for the article).

As part of that study we contacted the ministries in Ontario to get a list of the databases that they release to the general public or make publicly available. We were unable to get such a list. However, we were able to get a list of the databases that are maintained by the government that contain personal health information, whether health care related or not. Below is a good summary of these sources (click on the title to go to the document or site):

  • Ontario Health Planning Data Guide
  • Ontario Health Planning Survey Guide
  • Ontario Directory of Records

These data holdings are not publicly available, but they represent information that may be available under certain conditions (e.g., a data sharing agreement).
